Big Openings And Closings Stir Up This Round of Dallas Restaurant News

There’s lots of Dallas dish with a cool restaurant opening in Oak Cliff, a burger joint coming to downtown, and two closures on the east side of Dallas.

Here’s what’s happening in Dallas restaurant news:

The Mayor’s House is the name of a new restaurant opening in Oak Cliff, starring chef Graham Dodds, formerly of the Statler, which he left in 2018. The restaurant will debut in a historic Oak Cliff home at 635 N. Zang Blvd. in summer 2019. Once the home Dallas Mayor George Sergeant who was in office from 1935-37, the house was bought by thoughtful O.C. developer Jim Lake in order to develop it into a restaurant. It will feature several dining rooms with historic fixtures,  fireplace, and patio. Dodds will serve his signature dishes including biscuits, duck tacos with pickled onions, and fried pies. Dodd’s partners are husband-and-wife A.J. Gilbert and Martha Madison, who own restaurants in California and New York; Madison is also an actress on Days of Our Lives.

There’s no name yet for a new restaurant going into the former Villa-O space at 4514 Travis St. from Stephan Courseau (Le Bilboquet, Up on Knox) who is partnering with chef Curtis Stone and his brother Luke Stone. Curtis Stone is the TV personality, author, and owner of Maude, a restaurant in Beverly Hills, and Gwen Butcher Shop & Restaurant in Hollywood which he and Luke co-own. The restaurant will mirror Gwen with live-fire cooking techniques and a chef-driven butcher shop, and will open later in 2019.

Burgerim, noted for mini burgers, is opening a location in downtown Dallas, at 1722 N. Market St. Their burgers are 3-ounce patties, so you can choose from an uno, duo, trio, or 16 pack, as well as from a variety of buns, sauces, patty options, and toppings. Founded in Israel, the chain is in the midst of a big DFW expansion, with about a dozen locations open already and another dozen on the way. But hey, this is downtown Dallas, so it’s special.

Another Broken Egg Cafe, a breakfast and lunch restaurant in Casa Linda Plaza, closed in February. The chain has three other locations in the area, including Dallas, Southlake, and The Colony.

Lakewood 1st and 10, a sports bar in Lakewood, has a lockout notice taped on its door, according to a post on Facebook. The bar was still open on March 13, so the lockout is recent. The owners did not respond to emails nor answer the phone.

Circo Beach is a new two-story, 25,000-square-foot restaurant/day resort inside Circo Dallas, the spinoff of New York’s Le Cirque located in Uptown Dallas. Highlights include a truffle painting station where the chocolate confections are painted by hand; a floor-to-ceiling mural of Le Cirque founder Sirio Maccioni; a pasta station, where patrons can not only watch the makings of signature dishes like ravioli mamma eggi but also buy pasta to take home; and two open-air pools (one with a see-through glass bottom), private cabanas, spa services, and more.

City Hall Bistro, the all-day southern European-inspired eatery inside The Adolphus, has a new Main St. entrance. Chef Jeramie Robison has also introduced new menu items including rigatoni Bolognese, duck confit with sunchokes, and steamed mussels.

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria has introduced its spring menu featuring seasonal ingredients such as watermelon, strawberry, arugula and coconut. Watermelon arugula salad has arugula tossed with mint, feta cheese, cucumber, and watermelon. Prosciutto arugula pizza, a coal brick-oven classic white pizza topped with thinly sliced prosciutto and arugula. Banana cream cheesecake has a Nilla wafer cookie crust topped with whipped cream and crumbled Nilla wafers. Caramel Coconut Cheesecake has an Oreo cookie crust topped with caramel glaze, toasted coconut, chocolate drizzle and whipped cream. The Watermelon Mule is a twist on the traditional mule with vodka, ginger beer, Monin watermelon puree, lime juice, and watermelon chunks. Grimaldi’s has added the Chocolate Cannoli, currently featured in the winter menu, to its menu year-round. A fried pastry shell is dipped in chocolate and filled with sweet ricotta cheese, chocolate chips, finished with powdered sugar and more chocolate chips.

Creamistry, the made-to-order liquid nitrogen ice cream concept, is bringing 10 new flavor creations to its DFW locations. New flavors include: Lunch Box PB&J, with peanut butter ice cream, strawberries, strawberry sauce, and crushed toast; Mangonada, with mango sorbet covered in chamoy and tajin, accompanied by spicy Takis chips and lime juice; Unicorn Creation with birthday cake ice cream, mini marshmallows, blue marshmallow cream, and sparkly unicorn dust.

Elm Street Cask & Kitchen, the new neighborhood bourbon bar and grill in downtown Dallas, is now offering weekend brunch Saturday-Sunday 7 am-3 pm. Dishes include crab cake eggs benny, short rib egg sandwich, the hangover burger, farmers market frittata, chicken & waffle, avocado toast, almond-ricotta pancakes, sticky buns, and more.

Mimi’s Cafe will offer a new $10.99 lunch menu, available Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The new menu  allows guests to choose a salad or soup, including the classic French Onion and an entrée from a selection of new French-inspired sandwiches, including a returning favorite, the Turkey Royale Baguette, all served with fries. Mimi’s new French-inspired entrées include sandwiches, quinoa salads, and pastas such as grilled chicken pesto baguette, smoked salmon baguette, Parisian ham baguette, turkey hummus sandwich, croque monsieur, chicken & quinoa Mediterranean salad, spinach & shrimp quinoa salad, and chicken-mushroom pasta.

R&B, the ramen & bao restaurant at The Statler, has revamped its menu offerings and pricing. The new aims to provide guests a quick bite of their favorite Asian-American flavors without breaking the bank. New menu items include tonkotsu ramen for $13; tom kha soup for $11; and a cheeseBao-Ger with onion jam and American cheese for $3.50.

Malibu Poke is now offering grilled chicken at their Dallas location. It’s the first non-seafood protein on the menu. So you can get a bowl but with chicken chunks.

Tacodeli has two specials for March. For breakfast there’s a shrimp and chorizo grits taco ($3.50) has an egg on a bed of chorizo and grits, shrimp, maseca chile roux, and green onion, available 7–11 am on weekdays and 8 am–3 pm weekends. For lunch, the Arrachera steak taco ($3.95) with Heartbrand Beef Akaushi coulotte steak, salsa verde, grilled green onions, avocado, and queso fresco, available 11 am–3 pm every day.

Taco Cabana has new items including applewood-smoked Texas brisket tacos, a brisket breakfast bowl, and new crispy fish tacos, an option through Lent.

Twin Peaks has new menu items including spicy Thai ribs, St. Louis-style pork ribs, Carolina pork sandwich with a tangy mustard-based BBQ sauce, wedge salad, bacon slaw, and bourbon pecan pie infused with bourbon, served with Buffalo Trace bourbon sauce and vanilla ice cream.

Press Waffle Co. has three new cereal-themed waffles available through the end of March: Cinnamon Toast Crunch waffle topped with Cinnamon Toast Crunch, caramel and whipped cream; Fruity Pebbles waffle topped with Fruity Pebbles, lemon curd, and whipped cream; and Cocoa Puffs waffle topped with Cocoa Puffs, Nutella, and whipped cream.

Genghis Grill, the create-your-own stir-fry chain, is bringing back bottomless bowls, which allow customers to try as many bowl combinations as they can stuff into their gourd. For the price of one large bowl, guests can go back as many times as they want, and try something different each time.

Cotton Patch Cafe is doing all-you-can-eat catfish on Fridays for a limited time through Lent for $14. They also have some new spring menu items including honey-drizzled fried chicken, Cadillac queso, and tres leches cake.
