Texas student chefs join in fight against childhood obesity

Brewer High School students Seth Caldwell and Rebecca Lares gave a live cooking demo at the competition.

Aspiring young chefs have really been cooking down in Texas, competing to get their healthy recipes on the menus of three chains in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Twelve teams from local high schools competed this month in the annual Kids Fit Menu! Invitational, a collaboration to help fight childhood obesity comprising Medical City Children’s Hospital, the Texas Restaurant Association and Texas ProStart, a culinary program for high schools in North Texas. Two or three students competed on each team.

The prize includes getting their dishes on the children’s menus of Village Burger Bar, Genghis Grill or Grub Burger Bar. Each recipe was required to have two or more servings of veggies or fruit.
